I teach students to be great test-takers.

Hi there!

As we dive into the fall season, many parents like you are beginning to think about their teen's preparation for the PSAT, SAT, or ACT. The timing of when to start studying can be a tricky question, especially if your teen isn’t exactly thrilled about the prospect of more studying. However, getting the timeline right can make a big difference in their college admissions journey.

Whether your teen is rolling their eyes at the thought of test prep or eager to dive in, this week’s newsletter is packed with insights to help you navigate the process.

If you’re like most high school parents, you might be wondering - when does my teen have to start studying for the SAT?

You might have a teen that bristles and rolls their eyes at the mere mention of the SAT or ACT. While it may not be a conversation you’re looking forward to, the sooner you know when they should start test prep timeline, the sooner you can start dropping hints to your teen that even more studying (fun!) is on the way.

Or if your student is motivated and eager to start, you want to give them proven advice to set them up for success in their college admissions journey.

So when should your student start getting ready for the SAT or ACT?

The Right Test Prep Timeline

Here's my breakdown by grade level for when they should start thinking about SAT test prep or ACT test prep:

  • Pre-Sophomores: Don’t worry about test prep yet. Focus on mastering math and fostering a love for reading.
  • Sophomores: This year is about skill-building, but don’t forget about the PSAT in October—it’s the first real checkpoint.
  • Juniors: This is the year that counts! The October PSAT is a great starting point. A relaxed study schedule 4-6 weeks before the test is ideal.
  • Seniors: The next few tests are your last opportunity to maximize your score. At least 3-4 weeks before their next test date should be dedicated to brushing up on content and narrowing down the strategies they need for success.

I’ve got a detailed framework for how your teen can prepare for the PSAT, SAT or ACT this year. Read more in the full post here or by clicking the link below.

Hi Reader One of my students (I’ll call him Andrew) is a junior in an intensive intro to Calculus course. He’s the type of student most parents hope for: conscientious, prepared, cares a lot about performing at his potential. In fact, he’s usually harder on himself than anyone else is. When he makes a mistake, he gets frustrated and disappointed, not because his parents are pressuring him, but because he holds himself to a high standard. Recently, we hit a strange pattern. We were working on...
